What Grass Seed Should I Plant in Minnesota? Appropriate Turf Seed for Midwest Climates.

What is the grass you recommend for Minnesota?  The right seed for the best MN Turf. 







If you know what the pattern of the sun is in your yard you will want to plant grass seed based on that pattern. For instance at my home the back gets very little sun and the front gets plenty of sun. So I would suggest Kentucky Blue grass for the sunnier area and Perennial Rye. Sometimes in northern climates Fine Fescue is used in really shady grass areas.

What Weed Man Lawn Care of the Twin Cities uses. 
It is a pure blend 50/50 of Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Rye Grass. Kentucky Blue Grass is the Sun Mix, Perennial Rye Grass is the Shade Mix. These grass types are the best for the MN climate & seasons.
It may be difficult to find a pure blend at the Home Stores in Minnesota. Many have weed seeds and other multiple grass types mixed in which prevents the best grass system for our environment in the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas.

Control of Japanese Beetles and Grubs in Minnesota Lawns
The past few years we have noticed an increase in Japanese beetle populations throughout the Twin Cities, and this past summer was by far the worst (unfortunately, it looks like they are here to stay).  If you had them in your lawn, you are probably already well aware of what they can do.  These insects can over run a garden and leave plants with nothing but their stems.  Some of their favorite plants include birch and linden trees, rose bushes, and many types of vines.  Weed Man has two control strategies for Japanese beetles.  The first step is to stop their reproduction by eliminating their larvae, the white grub.  Grubs live in the soil feeding on roots of plants (including turfgrass) and pupate into beetles during the year.  The second step is to treat the actual beetles with a liquid contact insect control.

The best way to help reduce Japanese beetlepopulations is by controlling the larvae or grubs in the soil.  Grubs can be prevented with an application of granular grub pre-emergent but this must be done before mid to late August.  After this grubs, can still be controlled with a post-emergent product.  However, this is not as effective as the preventative pre-emergent application.  Again please feel free to talk to your technician or give us a call at the office 651-456-9696 if you have any questions.

Control of Sod Webworm in Minnesota Lawns

Sod Webworms in Your Minnesota Turf Grass 

Description:   
There are several species of caterpillars in Minnesota called sod webworms that can be highly destructive pests of Minnesota lawns.  Damage to grass is caused by the feeding of the larval or “worm” stage.  The damage first appears in early spring.  The damage shows up as small dead patches of grass among the normally growing grass.  The summer generation may cause general turf thinning or even irregular dead patches in late June into early August.  Sod webworms prefer sunny areas and the larvae are often found on south facing, steep slopes and banks, where it is hot and dry.  Heavily shaded turf is seldom attacked by the larvae.   Sod webworm adults are about 3/4-inch long, cigar-shaped and white-colored moths.  These Minnesota moths are easily identifiable as they tend to fly up from their resting spots when disturbed.  You may notice them while mowing or when walking through your lawn.  Simply spotting these moths does not necessarily mean you have a sod webworm infestation.  However, if you notice the moths as well as the damaged areas in your lawn, you could have a sod webworm problem.
Control Strategies:
1.        Cultural Control - Use Fertilizer and Water - Damage can often be outgrown if water is continually available. Considerable damage may occur if irrigation is not possible during periods of drought or close mowing is used.
2.       Insect Control - Sod webworms can be easily controlled with Weed Man’s granular insect control.  The best control is achieved by applying in the late afternoon so that the larvae ingest the product during their peak feeding time just before dark.  To be effective the product will need to be watered into the soil.

Minnesota Lawn Seed and Seeding Tips


SEEDING IN MINNESOTA ANSWERS

1.)  Rake area first and remove any dead grass.  Make sure soil is loosened
2.)  Sprinkle seed over bare areas.
3.)  Rake in seed.  Seed must have contact with soil in order to grow
4.)  Apply thin layer of topsoil (less than .5 inches) to protect new seed.  Other mulches (straw, organic mat) can also be used.
5.)  Water seedbed areas until moist, make sure to water seedbed every day keeping seeds moist for 10-14 days.
6.)  Recommended seed for Minnesota is Kentucky Blue/ Perennial Rye grass

Minnesota Summers and Great Lawn Care Tips

Minnesota in the Summer is beautiful and has a temperate climate that is great for lawns. Overall it is warm but not sweltering  heat like found in southern states. This provides for a good grass growing season starting around May through October.

How to Improve Your Minnesota Lawns

Save yourself time and headaches this season with advice from Paul Simon, a landscape architect and horticulturist with the National Gardening Association.
• Make sure your tools and garden equipment are in good condition.Check your mower blades (always remove the spark plugs) for sharpness and change the oil. Start it up early, so you aren’t stuck in line at the repair shop this spring or in the shopping line at the hardware store during a mid Minnesota Summer.
• Check the height on your mower. Cutting too low can burn the grass, and increase the pressure for weeds and pests. “Grass in peoples’ yard is a plant,” Simon says. “It needs enough leaf growth to sustain itself, and sustain itself well.”
• Test your soil. You can get free or cheap tests from local extension offices or universities. Knowing the pH of your dirt lets you know which plants will thrive (or not) in your beds.
• Inspect your plants for insect and weather damage. Before your trees and shrubs leaf out, take a look at their branching structure so you know where to prune.
• When it comes to water, remember that new plantings need more to drink than established ones. And make sure you’re spraying just the plants and not, say, the driveway.
• Look at the timing on the system, too. Typically the south side of your house gets more sun and needs more time compared to north or east sides, which have more shade.
• Remember your landscape is local. “I’d advise people when they’re visiting their garden centers and nurseries to talk to the experts there. Ask the questions they need to ask,” he says. “Every region’s different.”

What’s Growing in Minneapolis, MN
