Ahh, Summertime! What a great time of the year. The air is fresh in my lungs, warm yet refreshing. Enjoying the warm weather while it lasts in Minnesota is a time I cherish and look forward to every year. I love hanging out on my desk with my wife and kids with hardly any bugs, because Weed Man treated my yard for them. Before I could hardly enjoy my deck unless their was a brisk wind.

Dealing with Salt Damage on your lawn! Snow plow killed my grass?

Dealing  With Salt Damage:


Salts used on roads and sidewalks can cause moderate to severe damage to the turf and near plants. Salt damages the plants by drawing away moisture from the root system. This shocks the plant and causes browning and can kill the plants.


1:  To help your lawn recover, apply gypsum after the grass has dried out. 

2:  Then give the area a thorough watering for at least 30 minutes. (Gypsum can also be used to reduce damage from pet urine.)

Fall is an important time in the lawn care business.

It is a great time to take care of perennial weeds such as creeping charlie, clover etc. September is wonderful for aeration and overseeding or putting in sod. Putting down a quality fertilizer for the winter can be a key to a successful spring.

How to get rid of your leaves this fall? Leaf recycling and composting!

Leaf Recycling Tips:


There are several options for disposing of fallen leaves. The best way is to compost them, because composting keeps leaves out of streets and storm sewers.

1: You can also use the leaves, whole or chipped, as winter mulch around bushes and plants. 

2: Leave the leaves on the lawn and make several passes over them with a mower, chopping them into a thin     layer that is fine enough to stay on the lawn without causing damage but can still provide nourishment for the turf.

3: Also you can bag leaves for disposal from your local trash company or government agency.

Aeration is one of the best things that you can do to improve your lawns quality.

The Bluegrass is a sun grass and the Ryegrass is for the shaded areas. We use 4-5 lbs. per 1,000 square feet. If there are completely bare areas, they may need additional seed since it is not designed to completely fill in bare areas.

Controlling Moles in Minnesota! More on Moles, trapping Moles is the best method.

Minneapolis, MN Moles are certainly unwelcome and destructive pests to the lawn you have worked so hard to beautify. If left unchecked, moles can cause serious damage to your lawn’s root system and invite fellow animals to join the party going on underground.
Moles are insectivores (i.e. eat insects). While their eating habits can control some insect outbreaks on your property, their presence is not worth the trade-off. These burrowing animals dig extensive tunnels and create soil mounds in your Minneapolis, MN lawn that can be unsightly, hard to maneuver a lawn mower around, and, as mentioned earlier, can destroy your lawn’s root system and weaken its ability to stave off disease and insect damage.
Identification
Minneapolis, MN Moles are about the size of chipmunks, anywhere from 6 to 8 inches long, black to dark gray in color, and weigh 3 to 6 ounces. They feast primarily on earthworms and grubs, causing many homeowners to confuse the presence of grubs in the lawn as a sign of mole activity, but this is not always the case. Moles move quickly from one area of a lawn to another, establishing their tunnels and searching for insects.

  • Moles are prolific tunnel builders and can exert a lateral digging force 32 times their actual body weight.
  • A 5-ounce mole will consume 45 to 50 lbs. of worms and insects each year.

Prevention & Control
They key to mole prevention is creating an unwelcome environment for them underground. Because these pesky animals thrive in soft, moist soil, it is important that you do not over water your lawn. Regular grub control will also help limit one of their favorite food sources.
Controlling existing Minneapolis, MN mole populations is more of a challenge. There are mole repellent products on the market that can be used to temporarily stem the tide, but the most effective control practice for moles is trapping. Trapping by far is the most effective way to control the mole population in an area. Some times partnering with neighbors on a unilateral approach can increase success.

Do I have moles? Why does my lawn have large holes or tunnels?

MOLES:
Holes and trails that run throughout your lawn along hedges, sidewalks, and walls may be caused by rodents called moles. Moles are 6” – 8” (15-20 cm) in length with a thin tail. The mole’s eyes are concealed by hair. They have pink feet that are able to dig rapidly with broad (fingernail-type) claws.
DAMAGE:
During late spring and autumn, moles build an extensive network of both deep and surface tunnels. The tunnels act as the mole’s living quarters. Deep tunnels may be from 6 to 24” below the surface. The mole, creating molehills, may push up these tunnels. Shallow tunnels are often long winding pathways throughout the surface of the lawn. These pathways are used during damp weather when much of the mole’s food is near the surface. Moles are active all year round and can tunnel underground at a rate of 12-15 feet per hour with surface tunnels being built at 1 foot per minute.
BIOLOGY:

Mole populations usually remain stable throughout the season. Moles produce their offspring in the spring averaging three to four in a litter. The young remain with their mother for one month, and then begin tunneling. The young grow to adult size in four to eight weeks. Moles lead an extremely active life, eating their weight in food daily. They feed on insects, grubs and slugs found during tunneling, but their main source of food is the earthworm.
