• Fire-safe landscape blocks

• Gravel

• Leveling sand

• Fire-safe stone

• Landscape block adhesive

• Shovel

• Level

• Tamper

• String (optional)

Step 1

Start by stripping your Minnesota turf grass and plants away from the area in which you intend to build. Lay out a single layer of stones to judge the shape and size of the fire pit you would like to create. You can use a garden hose or a string to help define the boundary. Marking the outer edge with powdered chalk will provide clear perimeter lines for digging the base of the fire pit.

Step 2

Clear or Remove the stones, and then dig a six inch base for your new fire pit. As with any project requiring digging, call 811 first to make sure there is no danger of damaging utility lines. Cover the base of the excavated pit with a 6 inch layer of gravel from Home Depot and an inch or two of leveling sand. Use a level to ensure a perfectly even surface. Tamp down the surface to compact the sand.

Step 3

Return to the first layer of stones, adjust the level of sand below any that sits higher or lower than their surrounding blocks. Using a rubber mallet, tamp each stone to settle them firmly into the landscaping sand. Check the level of the stones to avoid sloping. Apply landscaped block adhesive to the top of each block, leaving a 2-inch perimeter between the adhesive and the edge of each individual block. Stagger the placement of the stones on each new layer so that each stone overlaps two stones in layers below it.

Step 4

Continue placing stones until you have built the fire pit to the desired height, preferably 3 to 4 blocks in height. Cover the floor of the pit with a layer of loose, fire-safe stones. Allow the adhesive to dry fully before using the pit. Paving around your pit will help reduce the chances that an errant spark of fire will come into contact with grass or other plants for your Minneapolis MN Lawn.
